The Motorhome Tour
The Romantic Road is Germany’s best known and most popular tourist route running from the River Main and the vineyards of Würzburg to the foot of the Alps. You will see the landscape change from river valleys, fertile agricultural land, forests and meadows in the north to dramatic mountain scenery in the south.
Visit the historic cities of Würzburg and Augsburg and the three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen and feel yourself being transported back in time before arriving at King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein in Schwangau, a region surrounded by four lakes at the bottom of the Ammergau Alps.
Day 1: Kitzingen
We start our tour in Kitzingen, the historic wine trading town located in the heart of the Franconian wine region. In the evening we will have a welcome dinner and a wine tasting to try some of the typical Franconian wines at the vineyard.
Day 2: Kitzingen – Weikerheim
On the way to Weikerheim visit the city of Würzburg with its Marienburg fortress, former Prince Bishop´s Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Monument and the old town. Further along the Romantic Road, visit Tauberbischofsheim, one of the oldest towns in the Tauber Valley, Lauda-Königshofen, a wine town with magnificent churches or Bad Mergentheim, a spa town famous for its castle.
Day 3: Weikersheim
Weikersheim is embedded in vineyards and is famous for its splendid Renaissance palace and magnificent gardens. There are great cycling paths and many possibilities for walks.
Day 4: Weikersheim – Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Today we only travel a short distance to Rothenburg ob der Tauber,the best-preserved medieval town in Germany and one of the top tourist stops along the Romantic Road. This picturesque medieval town looks much as it did in the Middle Ages, making it a delightful place to visit and feel yourself being transported back in time.
Day 5: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Today you have the full day to visit the town. Amble past beautiful old houses, secluded squares and tucked-away corners of the old quarter, where towers, taverns and town gates alternate with fountains, fortifications and former storehouses. Walk along the unbroken ring of town walls for impressive views of the town and the Tauber Valley. Don’t miss Käthe Wohlfahrts Christmas Museum and shop selling a huge range of traditional German Christmas items – all year round.
Day 6: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Dinkelsbühl
Today we travel to the former imperial town of Dinkelsbühl. The town wall with its towers and gates surrounds one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany.
Day 7: Dinkelsbühl
Take a walk through the historic centre and admire thehistoric market places lined with charming half-timbered houses and representative buildings. Alternatively, just relax at the campsite with it’s beautiful lake. Dinkelsbühl also has some excellent restaurants with typical regional cuisine.
Day 8: Dinkelsbühl – Augsburg
On the way to Augsburg make a stop in Nördlingen and walk right round Germany’s only completely preserved town wall. Visit Harburg, a medieval town with a maze of small, crooked lanes lined by half-timbered houses and home to one of Germany’s best-preserved castles, the mighty Harburg, towering above the village. Stop at Donauwörth, situated where the Rivers Wörnitz and Danube meet, Donauwörth was originally a fishing settlement. The historic town and Ried Island are the perfect places for sightseeing and for shopping. The narrow streets, idyllic squares, parks with fountains and cafés invite you to rest and linger.
Day 9: Augsburg
Augsburg is the largest city on the Romantic Road and is one of Germany’s oldest, founded by the romans 2000 years ago. The city has numerous places of interest, the most well-known being the Renaissance City Hall, the Cathedral, the Fuggerei social housing complex and the Augsburger Puppenkiste marionette theatre. Take your time to explore the city. Alternatively relax at your motorhome or go for a swim in the private lake at the campsite.
Day 10: Augsburg – Ammersee
On the way to lake Ammersee stop in Landsberg, situated on the banks of the river Lech. Visit the old town with its spacious market square lined with stately patrician houses, the town hall with its richly decorated stucco façade and the dominant “Schmalz” tower.
Day 11: Ammersee
Explore lake Ammersee on board one of the paddle steamers or visit the Benedictine monastery Andechs, the oldest pilgrimage church in Bavaria and home to Germany’s largest independent monastery brewery!
Day 12: Ammersee – Schwangau
On the way to Schwangau stop and visit the world famous Wieskirche Pilgrimage Church at the foot of the Alps near Steingaden. It is considered a perfect example of Bavarian rococo architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
Day 13 and 14: Schwangau
This region offers recreational and leisure options as well as culture in abundance. King Ludwig’s famous fairy-tale castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are a highlight of this tour, and for fabulous views of the Alps and the Forggensee we will all take the Tegelberg cable car to the mountain station at 1,720m. There are also 120 km of hiking and walking paths and to relax afterwards the Royal Crystal Thermal baths!
